Born in Searborough, England, Shirley Thomas spent most of her childhood in the Mediterranean before coming to Australia in 1954.

Shirley's book describes how a young Anglo-American family shared incredible danger and near starvation with the courageous people of the George Cross island of Malta during World War II.

At one stage, Malta was "the most heavily bombed place on earth".  The author should know, she was there!
