Sometimes, by the smallest action, a life is changed.  By volunteering for Z Special Unit, life took on a new meaning.  Richard was born in 1922 and grew up during the Depression and like thousands before him, joined the army as his duty.

This book is Richard's account of his time in the army; his recollections of training, of wartime Australia but mostly of Z Special Unit and the men in it.

He writes with drama and humour of the theatres of war; of its horror, exhilaration, courageous acts, comradeship. Casual stories of beheadings sit alongside the funny, personal dilemmas. He often questions why he volunteered so many times!

It was not the war Richard enjoyed; rather the strength of comradeship, personal challenges and the ingenuity of his fellow men.

One made the best of any situation and gave of your best. His memories and experiences are a testament to fellow mates who did not return ... Lest we forget.
